At a glance

Palmerston House is an impressive 3 bedroom terraced house, part of the 150 year old Grade I listed Golden Hill Fort. The Fort is surrounded by Golden Hill Country Park, located between the harbour town of Yarmouth and the village of Freshwater. 360 degree views from the communal roof garden stretch across the Solent, English Channel and West Wight countryside. This family friendly home away from home sleeps 7 in 3 double bedrooms (1 ensuite) and has a spacious open plan kitchen/living room.
The space
Please note: check in is after 5pm and check out is before 9.30am.
On the ground floor there is an entrance hall with coat stand, family bathroom (with a deep bath and overhead shower) and three bedrooms, all good sized doubles with the master benefitting from a superking bed and shower room en-suite. The second bedroom has a double bed and the third is fitted with a double and single bed. There are large sash windows and high ceilings allowing for a light and airy feel. A travel cot and child’s floor mattress are available.
Upstairs the well equipped open plan kitchen is fitted with marble worktops, integrated kitchen appliances including; large fridge, large freezer, dishwasher, washer/dryer and a coffee machine. There is a breakfast bar with bar stools. A high chair is available.
The living room area has two leather sofas, one of which pulls out as a sofa bed. There is a wall mounted TV with freeview and a DVD player. There is a 6-8 seater dining table and separate writing desk. Please note if visiting with very young children there is no stair gate for upstairs.
The upper floor has a beautiful red brick vaulted ceiling with mood lighting. A mix of underfloor heating and radiators heat the property.
Guest access
Access to the Fort is via a gated tunnel. Codes for gates will be provided with information pack. Two designated car parking spaces available directly outside Palmerston House (within courtyard).
Guests can access the house via the front door on the ground floor, there is also an exterior door on the upper floor via the communal balcony.

Please note: check in is after 5pm and check out before 9.30am.
Golden Hill Fort is a mix of residential and holiday homes. No loud music or parties allowed. Please do not hang washing outside. Please note there is an open pond with fountain in the courtyard. This is a no smoking property.
Please let us know in advance if you need the sofa bed (small double), travel cot or pouffe mattress (small single) made available for your stay. We would appreciate it if you could bring your own beach towels rather than using the white bathroom towels at the beach.
Please note - check in (after 5pm) and check out (before 9.30am) are not flexible during peak times.
If bringing a dog please do not let it on the beds or furniture. Please walk your dog in the country park rather than within the Fort. Dogs must be kept on leads within the courtyard and are not allowed on the roof garden,

It was clean, tidy and comfortable and Clare was very responsive to our queries. The house is ideally located for exploring the island and we really enjoyed staying in a bit of its history. We had a lovely weekend staying at the Golden Hill Fort, beautifully maintained, clean and amazingly equipped, we had everything that we needed in the kitchen and plenty of entertainment, great views from the roof.
Simple walk to an amazing local pub with great food, The Red Lion.
Would absolutely recommend, the photos may not do it justice!!

We had everything we needed provided and enjoyed the dvds and games provided. We’d love to return to experience it in the summer.

Spotlessly clean and very well equipped. Well placed to explore the Isle, and of course, enjoy an excellent lunch at The Hut!

Katie4 years on AirbnbNone5October 2024We had a fabulous stay at Golden Hill Fort. It has a great deal of Wow factor about it! The views from the roof top gardens are incredible and even the stairwells leading up to the roof are a delight of Victorian building design.
We were two families staying together and it worked well for us, especially the large communal space upstairs. My only concern was for the neighbours. Our noisy children were in a permanent state of excitement and the noise did seem to travel around the house like nothing I’ve ever know before.
In terms of location we found we were in a great place to explore the whole of the west coast and beyond. The road leading to Ventnor is a delight to drive and there is so much on the doorstep including a gorgeous pub, The Red Lion.

The location is utterly unique ( a Victorian fort !) with a roof garden overlooking the sea and countryside . Just sitting up there a joy ! Peaceful and spacious , wonderfully equipped , comfy beds and sofa beautiful Yarmouth harbour and marina 5 mins away great cafes and eateries and shops . The pier cafe tops. Coastal walks in both directions . Amazing variety of beach and cliff walks all around . And super lovely The Hut brassiere right on the sea ; just mins away . Five stars with bells on ! Thank you Clare , brilliant host .
