The space
The Castle can sleep up to 24 people with up to 11 double bedrooms, most having four posters and 5 having en suite facilities.
There are 5 reception rooms, including an 800 sq ft ballroom, suitable for entertaining and music events, a drawing room, a morning room, a dining room and an informal sitting room. On-site parking provides space for up to 20 cars and all amenities, shop, post office etc. are 5 minutes walk. Closer to hand, there is a beautiful shingle beach just 200 metres away and Cove Sailing Club is also a two minute walk.

We had a wedding nearby and used the house to spend a week with family and friends most of whom were from the US. The old worldy character of the place was perfect for our American guests. A great pub and café were walkable as was a bus and ferry. Special thanks to Dele and Moira for help in providing the perfect setting for our wedding week 🙂

They had some unexpected weather damage over winter, but had proactively contacted us to make sure it was OK and made sure we were still fully catered for. Communication throughout was top notch. If your main concern is being in a stunning location with a bunch of your nearest and dearest, comfy and with loads of room - this is the one.

The home would be a great place if you have a large group or if you’re celebrating something special. Location is a bit far from anything we wanted to do but there is a grocery store about 10 minute drive that had everything you need if you wanted to prepare your own meals.
Anna And Anthony7 years on AirbnbNone3September 2022This beautifully situated building is vast and full of character with incredible views over the water. Although bedding and linen were clean and bathrooms mostly modern and stocked with toilet roll, there were too many issues with the building’s general state of repair to enable you to truly relax.
The kitchen needs some updating and maybe a restocking of small items like teaspoons etc but was otherwise well equipped. The windows leak and the garden hasn’t had much love or attention, some areas being inaccessible which is a shame.
Part of the ceiling coving collapsed and fell in while we were there which is really just an indication of the overall condition of the building. The basement floors smell strongly of damp and the beds even felt wet on the lowest floor.
It’s an impressive space in a beautiful location and with some renovations, I’d definitely visit again. In its current condition, I wouldn’t return.
JackRaleigh, North CarolinaNone5September 2022Host was accommodating and the groundskeeper was kind and informative. Historic place that was quite cool to stay in; the furniture was ornate, the outside of the castle was beautiful and the view is excellent. That being said, the bottom two floors did have a slight damp smell, and a renovation would certainly go a long way for this place. It did not feel like a luxury stay, but it was by no means uncomfortable. It was a bit like staying the night in a museum. All in all, 5 star stay because I will remember this experience forever.
Stephen3 years on AirbnbNone5August 2022This was the perfect place for our family weekend to celebrate my mother's 90th birthday - 20 of us, and we all really loved the grand and spacious public rooms with space for people to split up and do their own thing; the dining room with the thrones made of driftwood and a table that could seat all of us for dinner; and all the many interesting nooks and crannies and classic Victorian baronial features. A really nice setting too, with great views from the windows. My mother loved her grand bedroom with the four poster bed and elegant ensuite, and the mix of bedrooms for the others in the party worked out well. The renovation isn't perfect to the last detail - but that didn't remotely bother us for something like this. Everyone had a great time, and we have all come away with some fantastic memories.
Paul8 years on AirbnbNone4July 2022We stayed at the end of July as a group of 15 adults, using 8 bedrooms. The house was cool when it was hot outside, and the log fires served us well when it wasn’t! There is loads of space with 3 large reception rooms and a huge dining room. The kitchen is only just large enough to cope with this number of people but there is a sink in the rear laundry room. We never ran out of hot water. We would stay here again.
Sarah4 years on AirbnbNone4July 2022Looking for an authentic feel with stunning views. The property has room after room for you to explore which we all had fun doing. Great communal rooms to all get together and still feel you have space. Great overall experience staying here.
Mike7 years on AirbnbNone5June 2022The castle is amazing!! Had a really good stag weekend there. Wish we could have stayed longer. No issues whatsoever.
