Howard is a cultured, kind, and attentive host who goes the extra mile. Enjoy breathtaking views of Wales around every corner. Step back in time to appreciate the days of yore. I dress in layers while in the UK, especially near the sea. After I soaked in a glorious warm bath, I burrowed beneath a pile of comforters in a four poster bed fit for a queen. Best sleep in years! Enjoy a delicious menu of breakfast cereals, pastries, toast, fruits, juices, cheeses, meats - all elegantly served by Howard as we looked out on his gorgeous property with his darling girls near, dachshund sisters Biddy and Bella. We marveled at Arthog’s own waterfalls, nearby vast beaches, charming towns, and the rugged beauty of Cader Idris. Howard delighted us with stories and played his grand piano with well known show tunes. An amazing time in an enchanted place, a true gem in the heart of Wales. We’ll be back! Until then, we’ll share this experience and stunning photos.

The description of Arthog Hall sounded perfect. Unfortunately it wasn’t. The description of facilities listed as available to us were false. Don’t be fooled by the incredible areal shot of the grounds – it’s an old photo. The main entrance is stacked with old cars. The terrace is occupied by a washing line and the front lawn is littered with dog mess and toys. We arrived in the dark and the full horror wasn’t revealed until daybreak when I went to the window to take in the view. Our four poster ‘suite ‘ was a basic room with external toilet facilities sited a public walk away down a musty smelling corridor via the host’s chaotic office workspace. The complimentary bath products were used and left over from the previous occupants. There was no bath, just a shower cubicle. Breakfast was a joke. Tinned fruit covered in fruit flies and an orange flavoured drink describing itself as fresh orange juice. The host hovered around us pampering his dogs – which were not mentioned in the listing. I don’t like dogs and they made a bolt for me whenever I entered the room. The facilities in the listing and which we expected include fridge, wine glasses, record player, sound system, fireplace, balcony, terrace, private beach, outdoor dining area – none of these were available. All in all a very poor attempt at hosting. The nightmare of instant coffee sachets and plastic spoon on the hospitality tray in the bedroom will haunt me forever. Don’t waste your money.
Paul | 3 years on Airbnb | None | 5 | August 2022 | My partner and I stayed for one night in the red room. Howard greeted us on arrival and offered to help with our bags and make dinner reservations if we needed it with a recommendation of local places. He made us feel very welcome. We enjoyed the beautiful garden and the views as well as the hall itself. We slept well in the room, the bed was very comfortable. The facilities were clean and well stocked. Lots of tea, coffee and water provided as well as a lovely coffee machine which we enjoyed this morning. Breakfast was lovely - the spread was wonderful! Lots of cereals, fruit, croissants, yoghurt. We also enjoyed spending time chatting to Howard who was a wonderful host. He made us laugh and was very friendly, nothing was too much. We also enjoyed his lovely 2 daschunds who were very cute! Thank you Howard for a great stay, we will definitely come again.
Neil | 6 years on Airbnb | None | 5 | July 2022 | Great host friendly and attentive. Helpful local knowledge of places of interest and eating out. We enjoyed the continental breakfast and the cute miniature dachshunds Bella & Biddy. A truly memorable stay in a unique location. Thank you Howard. Best wishes for the future, Neil & Maria
Kevin | 7 years on Airbnb | None | 5 | June 2022 | What a fantastic stay, Howard is an incredible host and so so welcoming and friendly. We stayed in the Mawddach suite (the red room) and beautiful view over the river and surrounding hills/ mountains. The bed and mattress were unbelievably comfortable and we were so spoilt at breakfast. We will definitely be coming back when we are next in that direction and highly recommend for anyone thinking of staying the night. K&J x
Damien | 9 years on Airbnb | None | 5 | June 2022 | Fantastic location, fantastic place, Howard was amazing and attentive, couldn’t do enough for you, his place is going to be a permanent base for us when we go to wales in the future! Fantastic walks on the doorstep, the waterfall and lakes were truly beautiful!
Lee | 6 years on Airbnb | None | 5 | May 2022 | Set in the scenic Welsh countryside, Arthog Hall is a unique place to stay that offers guests the opportunity to enjoy a historic venue and the comforts offered by a keen host. It is important to remember this is an occupied home, and it feels more like a bed & breakfast or boutique hotel rather than an Airbnb with more open access to the premises and we primarily stayed in our room and respected the request for short showers and privacy from the host. The host's company over breakfast was very engaging and pleasant, and we intend to return to the area at a later date to further explore the waterfalls and lakes nearby.
Vicki | 11 years on Airbnb | None | 5 | February 2022 | From S Gennard Thank-you Howard for making this an 80th Birthday to remember for my father and our family. Nothing was too much trouble and you made your home our home. Gorgeous continental breakfast, beautiful rooms I didn’t want to leave. We used to stay in Arthog back in the 80’s on family holidays and thought it would be a lovely idea to celebrate as a family there once again and re live wonderful memories. Your hospitality really went above and beyond our expectations and once again we shared an amazing holiday at Arthog Hall.
John | 10 years on Airbnb | None | 4 | October 2021 | Staying with Howard at Arthog Hall was one of the highlights of our bike pack trip. We were welcomed, despite arriving early and shown to our very comfortable bedroom witha lovely view of the estuary and a private shower room. The bed was very comfortable and Howard made us a cuppa which helped us to recuperate from our bike ride! There is a very pretty cycle route from Penmaienpool to Arthog which i can definitely recommend. Howard was very charming and told us some fascinating stories about the house and from his life. We enjoyed our breakfast too. Thanks Howard!
Glen | 7 years on Airbnb | None | 5 | September 2021 | A grand entrance greets you in this lovely Hall. While it may appear imposing Howard soon puts that to rest. Such an interesting person who is also so helpful and accommodating. His two gorgeous Dachshunds are very friendly...and keen to make new friends. |
