We were made to feel very welcome and Hildur had thoughtfully left us some welcome wine which was a really nice touch. We were a party of fifteen and we rented both the main castle and the castle apartment. We had super comfy beds and plenty of space both indoors and out to relax and enjoy ourselves. The castle is equipped with everything you need to make it feel like a home from home including a catering spec kitchen in the main building and a laundry room. We all enjoyed making lots of use of the big hall for family activities and general chilling out. Locally there is a ton of stuff to do. We enjoyed paddle boarding, archery, hiking and cycling at Galloway Forest Park, and we found the perfect beach, Dalavan Bay, at Cardoness holiday park a fifteen minute drive away. Whilst there some of the family climbed Merrick Moutain too, stunning views out to the Alisa Craig. Machermore Castle will go down as a favourite holiday for us all and we would love to return. | |||

The accommodation was excellent for our purposes. The seven bedrooms were split between two wings - one a conversion of an existing part of the castle, and one the upper floor of a new extension. All were clean, fresh and comfortable, albeit fitted out in a slightly basic way. The other accommodation - the drawing room, bar, and catering standard kitchen in the original castle, together with the ballroom extension, provided plenty space for adults and children to do their own thing. The gym equipment and table tennis table were also a hit. Do bear in mind that not all of the castle is open as there is clearly a sizeable ongoing restoration project under way. The upper castle floors are not accessible with the rental - but what we had was perfectly adequate and appropriate for our party, and the various rooms were exactly as described on Airbnb. We had a great time. The weather wasn’t conducive to much external exploring but the grounds looked well worth investigating. A couple of things worth knowing: firstly the tv is internet driven and as the wifi signal isn’t overly strong, it froze quite a lot; and secondly the three new bedrooms in the extension area are underneath a separate flat. The sound insulation there is not great, and we could hear every movement and conversation from upstairs (not the actual words spoken!) in our beds at night. Finally, do lock the external doors from the inside. There were quite a few walkers passing who were clearly interested in the castle, and we had one party make their way inside and up to the bar area, looking for admission to see round! We would stay here again. | |||

Spent most of the day in the large room as we had 6 little girls between the ages of 2 and 9 and they could happily play and run around. They loved dressing up as princesses. We were worried the Castle may be cold but it was warm and we actually had to turn our radiators down in the bedrooms at night. The kitchen is well equipped for larger gatherings. We spent a morning at Carrick Bay on the beach which is nearby and ended up at Cream o’ Galloway for ice cream. Great stay and wonderful family memories made. | |||

Easy check in, everywhere was clean and well presented, the hosts were great. I had booked for my partners 30th for 14 of us and he really enjoyed it - I wish we were staying longer! The grounds were lovely with a river nearby for kayaking and a short walk to local pub and shops. Only downfall was some renovations going on to the grounds and that some areas of the castle were blocked off as it would have been nice go explore. We would definitely love to return! | |||

The location is amazing with amazing views and great walks within a suitable distance. I can’t fault anything with the castle, I’d highly recommend staying here. |
