At a glance

If you are looking for whitewashed minimalism this is not the place for you. Think Outlander, Jacobites, Sherlock Holmes, or Harry Potter, they'd all be comfortable here. Old Newton is an ancient fortified house built for defense with thick walls, low doors and spiral staircases. There are six bedrooms and six/seven public rooms. Ideal for family gatherings, retreats and reunions, with plenty of space to escape or to congregate.
The space
Old Newton is one of the three oldest continually inhabited houses in Scotland. It's rich written history can be dated back to the 14th century. Prince Charles Edward Stuart, David Hume the eminent Scottish philosopher, and Walter Scott, who wrote The Lady of the Lake here, have all been guests. The Edmonstones, who owned the house before the current Laird, were known Jacobites. Two of them were sent to the Tower of London but escaped death by virtue of their servants. Most recently the house has had a further Jacobite connection since it was home to members of the cast and crew of Outlander.
Guest access
Guest have access to the whole of the house and a large enclosed garden. Most rooms have a view of Doune castle or the parkland. The house is in a unique location set in its own grounds on the edge of the village. Within a few minutes walk the amenities are second to none. Good food, clothes, curios and gifts, not to mention having the magnificent Doune castle within an arrow shot!
Other things to note
The house has an Aga which is the beating heart of the kitchen. If you have not cooked on an Aga the housekeeper or myself will be happy to give you a quick demonstration. We are here to make your stay as memorable as possible. No weddings.

Not a speck of dust in the place; amazing for an ancient monument. No idea how she does it!
Absolutely perfect for a family celebration or reunion.
A chance for an unparalleled historical stay in a truly magical location.
Back again one day we all hope.

You really can't compare it to anything else. My husband and me celebrated our 50th birthdays here with our family. It was a fantastic stay enjoyed by all.
Vicki is very responsive, greeting us on arrival and responding to all queries We had so much fun exploring . The older kids pranked a sibling at night using the secret door, and they had many games of hide and seek ... where else do you find a dungeon under your accommodation?! Even going to the loo here is an experience!
There is so much space which is ideal with a large family gathering. My favourite space was the kitchen with warm Aga where I enjoyed a peaceful early morning coffee whilst looking over the garden to Doune Castle. My husband loved the sun patio as we had amazing weather the whole stay.
Buttercup cafe was great for a family lunch and they baked my excellent birthday cake, an excellent breakfast was enjoyed by all at Smiddy Farm Shop and cafe.
Highly recommend. Thank you

Greta spot to visit attractions or kick back and relax. Vicki was delightful and a great host! I would definitely stay here again. Sad to leave this slice of heaven!

Great host .
Juanita6 years on AirbnbNone5January 2024A truly amazing castle, full of interest and intrigue. We loved congregating in the huge kitchen, great for large. Also the rather grand and atmospheric medieval feeling dining room, which happily seated all of our friends and family for a New Year’s Day lunch. The many bed and reception rooms in different wings provide peace and privacy for large family and friend groups. The setting is beautiful and idyllic surroundings to walk in for hours straight from the door.
Virginia2 years on AirbnbNone5November 2023The house is lovely, and has every mod con you can think of. The kitchen and dining room are very well equipped. Such an interesting property with a dungeon and secret hidey holes! Well set out and fully enclosed gardens. Perfect for large family gatherings. Highly recommended!
LisaPowell, OhioNone5September 2023We felt like royals in this beautiful castle. It is comfortable and thoughtfully appointed. We enjoyed finding the hidden nooks within its spacious walls. And the private grounds provided a peaceful reprieve after a day of exploring the countryside. It is ideally located to Stirling and walkable to Doune (steps from Doune Castle). Be sure to notice the artwork and ask Vicki about the resident artist.
