A unique opportunity to stay in one of Derbyshire’s historic country homes, Riber Hall Manor.
Riber Hall dates from the 1400’s. This beautifully restored Elizabethan manor house is situated in Riber, a tiny hamlet in the Derbyshire Dales.
It is alleged Mary Queen of Scots was detained in Riber Hall. By 1724 the Hall was split it into two halves; here is your opportunity to stay in the hidden secret side of Riber Hall with its deep history and authentic English country charm.
The space
The hidden secret of Riber Hall Manor.
Built by the Ribergh family, this Grade II* listed Elizabethan manor house was home to the famous Derbyshire Wolley family until 1668.
During the Civil War, Riber Hall was a royalist stronghold (although recent research suggests otherwise!) and it is rumoured that a secret passageway exists from the Hall to Dethick where the Babington’s lived. Anthony Babington was an English nobleman who was convicted of plotting the assassination of Elizabeth 1st of England and conspiring with the imprisoned Mary, Queen of Scots. It is alleged Mary Queen of Scots was detained in Riber Hall and indeed one of our bedrooms would suggest this.
By 1724, the hall was owned by the Chappel family and two sisters divided the hall and split it into two halves. One half of this romantic home was previously known as a highly regarded country house hotel. Meanwhile, the other untouched side seems to have been forgotten over the years, until now.
Here is your opportunity to stay in the hidden secret side of Riber Hall with authentic and fascinating English country charm, plus a deep history that we love to share with our guests.
Riber is a hamlet in the Derbyshire Dales, situated high on a hill overlooking Matlock; boasting some of the most dramatic views in Derbyshire.
The continental breakfast is served in the beautiful 15th Century oak-panelled dining room.

She took great pride sharing her home with us, evidenced by the eagerness she opened her doors, gave us a full tour of the home and gave us an overview of its history dating back to the 1600s. One of the friendliest most accommodating hosts I’ve came across, genuinely lovely to talk to, and also not overbearing. Breakfast was a lovely treat too and took the stress away from the morning. I would love to stay again and bring back many more friends to this part of the world!

The house, the room, the beautiful scenery and especially the wonderful Alison will definitely become a dear memory. We felt so special staying here, and sitting at breakfast hearing about the history of the place. Alison is such a warm and kind person, and if there is one thing we regret after our stay it's not getting to know more about her and the manor.
If we ever get the chance we will not hesitate to book a stay with Alison again❤️

Lovely welcome from Alison, spacious room with everything one needed, plenty of hot water to enjoy a warming bath, comfortable bed and some nice touches in the room. Very nice breakfast, fresh fruit salad and Greek yoghurt, cereals, toast and fresh coffee, extra offered if we wanted it.
