The space
Traditional vintage charm combines with boutique flair inside, with many secret spots to sit and absorb the tranquil grounds. Every effort has been made to preserve original features of the Castle, including the stripped-back blond hardwood floor, and the art deco spiral stairs case from a Glaswegian company at the height of its industrial heyday. History buffs will particularly delight at the original furniture, art works and artifacts dotted throughout the space.
With its triple-floor loft style, the apartment will appeal to those with passion for architecture and history. Persian rugs cover the gorgeous reclaimed wood floor, original to the Castle. An arcadia mural stands prominently in the living room and family space. Mid-century leather sofa and gold coffee table, alongside leather rocking chairs and an electric, but realistic, fire place will make sure you lounge in true Mad-Men style. A modern kitchen recently refurbished in blue and breakfast bar will encourage lengthy lingerings alongside poached eggs. There is a large dining table with comfortable chairs for at least 10 people.
Five bedrooms make slumberous havens. Plush wall-to-wall carpets are throughout the top floor, alongside four ensuite bathrooms. The fifth bedroom is on the ground floor and has a wooden floor. The collection of beds in the apartment is definitely something to write home about: Italianate canopy bed, 18th-century antique mahogany single beds, linen-upholstered and brass-studded rococo bed, and the grand colonial style reclaimed wood bed will ensure the sweetest sleeps.
Historic Edwardian castle estate in the heart of picturesque Portpatrick. 2000 acres of glen walks, forests, beaches, lochs, gardens and waterfalls to explore. The Castle Apartment is completely self-contained with its own private courtyard and entrance.
The walled garden with its glass house is a romantic and peaceful retreat on the estate. Two lochs nestle into the hills and rhododendron banks. Wander along the glen walk past a rushing waterfall, and a babbling brook, to the two beaches to spot dolphins and seals. Dunskey Golf Course and the picturesque Portpatrick Harbour is two minutes away. Fishing expeditions from the beaches or on our two lochs are available. Pheasant shooting and deer stalking are also available upon request.
We will be available to assist in any way we can throughout your stay.
Portpatrick Village has a public tennis court, putting green, golf course, beaches, and many restaurants. It is a very family-friendly destination.
Parking is available throughout the estate, including the drive down the beach. A car is highly recommended for the area.
Wellies are highly recommended for the walks around the grounds.
Guest access
The 2000-acre Dunskey Estate is your private pleasure ground. You'll roam freely and will typically encounter no one during your stay in this truly hidden and magnificent gem in Scotland.
We make bedrooms available based on the number of guests in the group.
Other things to note
FOR CANCELLATIONS:
Full refund for cancellations made within 48 hours of booking, if the check-in date is at least 14 days away.
25% refund for cancellations made at least 21 days before check-in.
No refunds for cancellations made within 21 days of check-in.
FOR BOOKING MODIFICATIONS:
A one-time complimentary change of date can be made if the check-in date is more than 90 days away. The cost of the nightly rate will remain the same as the original booking OR the cost of the nightly rate for the newly requested dates or newly requested property, whichever is higher.
If the check-in date is less than 90 days away, a 170gbp fee is applied to the modification request. The cost of the nightly rate will remain the same as the original booking OR the cost of the nightly rate for the newly requested dates or newly requested property, whichever is higher.
We are unable to accommodate any change of date or change of property if the check-in date is less than 21 days away.
We carry out a deep cleaning process for allergen removal for every booking with pets. The cost is 60gbp / stay for up to two pets. This is added to your guest bill that is sent to you upon departure.

The Royal Apartment was impeccably equipped and maintained. Each room featured a private en suite, which included plush down comforters, soft pillows, and firm yet comfortable mattresses, ensuring a restful night’s sleep for everyone. The open-plan living area, complete with a well-equipped chef’s kitchen, dining room, and cozy lounge, was a delight to relax in. The kitchen, a chef’s dream, came stocked with farm-fresh eggs, homemade fudge, muffins, and butter. We also enjoyed delicious chef-prepared meals, including a variety of soups and entrees, which we had pre-ordered.
Exploring the 2,000-acre estate was a highlight of our stay. The stunning walled garden, well-maintained stables, tennis courts, lakes, bluffs, glens, and beaches made a visit to the Scottish Lowlands a highlight!

I had initially requested the Royal Apartment but as this was being renovated, we were relocated to Saltwater Chronicles - which felt like we had won the lottery! Saltwater Chronicles is a 3 bedroom house, all with en suite bathrooms, with a well-equipped kitchen/dining area and a lounge / drawing room and a large paved outdoor area with another table to boot. The crowning glory was a private deck looking out over the beach and the bay area - stunning! The team have been to considerable effort to ensure a 5 star experience - toiletries, towels, kitchen equipment and the level of cleanliness were all exemplary. We requested ready-made meals and went out on some organised activities - all brilliant and good value for money! Thank you to the Dunskey Estate for having us!

The hikes to the beaches and Dunskey ruins were so incredibly beautiful alongside the ocean coast. The staff was lovely! We had the best time during our archery session, so much fun, and they set up a fantastic beach bonfire for us on our last night. We dared ourselves to jump into the freezing lochs and we did! So many memories made with great friends and family. Overall, the lush and comfortable accommodations mixed with the beautiful Scottish seaside made for an incredible adventure that I will never forget and hope to do again in the future! Thank you!
Fiona2 years on AirbnbNone5April 2024We booked for three nights in the Royal Apartment but due to property damage we ended up spending a night in Velvet Upperground and 2 nights in Saltwater Chronicles. Both properties are absolutely gorgeous. Everything you need is there and the woodland walks, sea views and beach rambles are breathtaking. The hosts were very friendly and helpful, but we were able to enjoy our stay in complete privacy. I only wish we could have stayed longer. Safe to say, we didn't want to leave and won't hesitate to come back.
