Stay in a Grade 1 listed Jacobean gatehouse, set in marvellous Devon countryside - a perfect place to unwind. The silence and stars at night are breathtaking. Our land has far reaching views to Bodmin Moor and Dartmoor, and then slopes down to the Tamar river. You can walk over the 600 acre farm, or take to the nearby moors! The beaches of North Devon and Cornwall are only 45 minutes away.
The space
The gatehouse is essentially two rooms above the ancient archway to the Manor House. The sitting room and bedroom are both accessed by steep, narrow winding stairs so the property is not suitable for everybody. We have a wood chip district heating system, and a wood burner in the sitting room so you will always be warm.
We are regularly complemented on the comfort of the king size bed, the goose down pillows and duvets and the French linen. Please check out the reviews!
The farm is mixed sheep, cattle and arable, so dogs must be kept strictly under control, and gates carefully shut. If your dog is not hundred percent reliable with livestock it must be kept on a lead when outside. When in the house we would ask that it is not allowed upstairs in the bedroom. We also have a livery behind the Manor House, so there may be the odd passing horse and rider. To the left of the gatehouse there is a stable for three horses, so there will be some activity from there during your stay.
Guest access
There is a table, barbecue and some chairs outside, to the side of the gatehouse for the use of guests. There are walking maps of the farm and the local area in the house.
Other things to note
The kitchen is small - the oven is a combination grill/oven/microwave and the hob has only two rings - it is more than adequate for everyday use but maybe not for a culinary feast.

Great place to stay and get away to a real treat. The bonus no tv and no tech…. The hosts could not have been more friendly and welcoming. Thank you and very well done….

Emma was a helpful and responsive host, and made sure we had everything we needed and responded quickly to a query. The ample supply of firewood was a big bonus to keep the wood burner going, as the temperature dropped below freezing two nights and the building is draughty in places. The very small kitchen is ingenious in its use of space and we enjoyed making use of it. The feather-down duvet kept us incredibly warm at night. Emma makes very helpful recommendations about where to eat locally, and we especially enjoyed our meal at the Cornish Arms in Tavistock. Recommended - though do bring lots of warm clothes if staying in mid-winter!EmmaJanuary 2025I am sorry that you sound as if you were cold during your stay. There are instructions as to how to turn up the thermostat, and Will could have helped you out.

We were visiting family in the nearby area, and this was the perfect space to call home for a couple of days while exploring. We live in Australia and special, historic buildings such as this one, are extremely rare. My partner is a builder and was very taken with the renovation and how unique this building is. The bed was also the most comfortable bed ever, with the most beautiful french linen sheets. Gorgeous, clean bathroom with a great shower. Charming, elegant touches. Convenient kitchen with everything you need. We stayed here during Winter, and we found the space to be warm, and we also enjoyed using the log fire. We would love to return to this place - it is beyond special and it was a privilege to stay here. Thank you so much Emma & Romilly.
Zoe9 years on AirbnbNone5November 2024The Gatehouse is so impressive and completely unique, I have never stayed in a historic building before and I was quite blown away by it. It’s finished to an incredibly high standard, the oak floors and beams are just lovely. The bed is the most comfortable I have experienced away from home and the area is peaceful, beautiful and great for walks. Will definitely be returning.
Miriam9 years on AirbnbNone5September 2024We really enjoyed our stay at the Gatehouse. It was such a great opportunity to stay there. We will forever remember our stay as a small time-travel to the Tudor era, while the apartment also offers the amenities of modern times.
We mostly went there for day trips / hiking in the surrounding area, but I think it is also the perfect romantic place for reading, writing or even drawing and to spend a full day inside. Part of what makes this place so special is certainly that it's an old (though very nicely restored) building, so it's natural to encounter more spiders or insects than you would in a city apartment, though it was ok for us (and certainly not a cleanliness problem!). One can see how much planning and work has gone into the restoration of the building. It is amazing that you can rent such a place!
Emma and especially Romilly whom we've personally met were lovely hosts who offered more help and service than one can usually expect. We would love to come back one day.
Maria8 years on AirbnbNone5August 2024What a find!
We thank Emma and Romily for an amazing stay. A wonderful gem in Devon.
Everything was perfect for us. It was clean despite the few visiting woodlice in the bathroom, which we did not mind.
Despite the small kitchen and bathroom, it has been cleverly done.
The bed was so comfortable and as my sister said ‘it was like sleeping on a cloud’.
The kitchen had most of what was needed for a short stay and everything was easy to use.
Amazing how a small space could fit so many things from the kitchen to the bathroom.
A very comfortable and magical space.
It is evident that this project has been a labour of love for Emma and family.
It was lovely meeting Romily who was friendly and also checked that all was well.
I would not hesitate to recommend this to anyone looking for something different that is full of history and magical.
Beth5 years on AirbnbNone5July 2024Beautiful place to stay. Remote but peaceful and very nicely designed to keep the historic character whisky still providing homely creature comforts. We were very taken care of by the hosts.
Jane11 years on AirbnbNone5May 2024This is a magical place - completely unique. Wonderful location with a great sense of history. The gatehouse is beautifully decorated, furnished and kitted out. The countryside around is stunning with great walks. Perfect hosts - I would definitely go back!
MichaelRenton, WashingtonNone5May 2024What a lovely place to stay! Hope to return.
Jonathan9 years on AirbnbNone5April 2024What an amazing place, truly one of a kind and a place that I’ll fondly remember the chance to stay in. A charming, strange, stunning ancient (Tudor?) gatehouse, full of original architectural features and furniture. Small, but cunningly formed - perfectly suited for a couple - and despite its age, the building is very comfortable and warm with all the creature comforts you’d want.
The property is quiet, isolated, and surrounded by lovely countryside where walks are easy to stumble upon.
Emma and Romily are both very good hosts, proactive, kind, helpful and generous.
Would highly recommend!
