The Lady Maxwell Room - Buittle Castle, Castle

Content

  • Named after Lady Maxwell, a former resident of Buittle Castle, the room is appointed in the Gothic Revival and Arts and Crafts styles. The room is on the ground floor, with its own private access to the courtyard (with one step) and its own ensuite bathroom with shower. Full Scottish or American breakfast is included. Gluten-free and vegetarian options are also available. Please let us know of any dietary requirements ahead of time. We aim to offer guests a true country house experience.
    The space
Buittle Castle offers the experience of staying in a working, privately owned Scottish castle. The site which the present tower occupies what was once the inner bailey of the medieval Buittle Castle, one of Scotland's royal castles and twice capital of Scotland. Buittle was home to Lady Devorguilla of Galloway and the Bailliol Dynasty, and later a Jacobite stronghold of the Gordon and Maxwell families, who re-constructed the original 13th Century keep into the present L-plan tower, circa 1500. Buittle Castle, unlike many such buildings, remains very much a working building, and so retains the feel that these buildings had when first built, surrounded by formal gardens, livestock, vegetable growing and pleasure grounds. It is currently home to James, the 24th great grandson of Lady Devorguilla, and his cousin Tobias, who have re-acquired the castle after roughly 60 years of it being out of family ownership. The site is also home to a working printing office specialising in craft letterpress printing and bookbinding, and a medieval chapel, with an interesting Jacobite history, in which services are regularly celebrated in the pre-reformation Use of Sarum.
    Guest access
Guests have exclusive use of their own room, and may use the gardens, grounds, and moat walk. Use of other parts of the castle can be arranged prior to stay, including the hot tub. Fishing can also be arranged on the castle's private stretch of the Urr Water, a noted salmon and trout river.
    During your stay
Guests have a private room with its own entrance. Should any requirements arise, the house manager or one of the owners will be available to attend to guest's needs.

The breakfast was delicious, and tea/coffee facilities in the room were a great touch.
Check in was easy, with Tobias being very responsive and helpful with our last minute booking. Hot tub was a great place to relax as it got dark, and the room was lovely and cosy in the evening. Would definitely stay again!

Tobias was a fantastic host and a true gentleman. One thing for all new time visitors. Make sure the satnav says buittle castle and not buittle cottage otherwise you’ll end up a very nice Scottish farmers house
It’s a must stay, the perfect peaceful area with a town 5-10 mins away if you’re desperate for anything.
    Thanks again Tobias 🙂

Julie2 years on AirbnbNone5December 2024Gorgeous location! Breakfast was great, bed was very comfortable and room was lovely and cosy. Wish I knew Mary Queen of Scots had stayed over at the castle.. although it may have been too much for me and I would probably have fainted with excitement!
Thanks for letting us share your beautiful home for the night.

Claire9 years on AirbnbNone5October 2023Tobias was an excellent host. He was super friendly and approachable when we found ourselves stuck waiting for a ferry to Isle of Arran. He could not do more for us and we were very grateful as it was the start of our honeymoon. It was an amazing setting and we would visit again it will hold special memories for us. Thank you
