This one-bedroom apartment in the South Wing offers a luxury escape for guests in a genuinely historic Scottish castle. Once the Butler’s Apartment, the space has been transformed into a well-proportioned suite with sweeping views over the extensive parkland.
The space
The baronial style that is evident in the castle’s architecture has been reflected in the bedroom with the extravagant use of the Maitland family’s tartan for the statement bed and other soft furnishings. The 3rd Earl of Lauderdale adopted the blue and green tartan that belonged to his wife Elizabeth Lauder’s family, and the Lauder tartan has been used as the Maitland family tartan ever since. The grandeur continues into the bathroom where a luxurious free-standing roll-top bath takes up the centre of the room.
In the open-plan living, dining and kitchen area the natural colouring gives a relaxed but sumptuous feel. Paintings, prints and items of furniture from the castle collection are used throughout.
A charming, established apartment where guests can get a feel for what it is like to live in a Scottish castle.
Other things to note
We welcome families and can provide travel cots and high chairs for our younger guests. There is a play area in the castle grounds that guests are welcome to use and a selection of toys and games are provided in the apartment. We are also dog friendly and are very happy for you to bring your four-legged friend with you to stay.

Although the castle is slightly out of the way, it is well worth the stay. You will find peaceful walking trails, a great place to eat nearby, and the apartments are luxurious. Seriously - the photos do not do it justice.
Definitely ask for the guided tour of the castle! We came in the off season, so our tour was only about five people. We were able to see some beautiful paintings, historic artifacts, and hear about the castles history.
I would again like to praise the staff for their incredible hospitality skills. Although this is a busy castle, they are willing to help. We had someone open the gift shop for us, another person helped us reach a cab when our phones were out of service, and they even allowed for a later checkout. They were genuinely warm to us as they helped, and made our stay that much better.
A vacation out of a fantasy book!

The castle and the apartment within it were stunning. A special place to celebrate a birthday. Everything is very well presented and comfortable. Feels very private. The grounds are beautiful. Would definitely book again.
Lina7 years on AirbnbNone5December 2024Beautiful and magical stay, wonderful apartment, spacious and with everything you need.
Just be aware this is not a hotel so make sure you buy groceries or plan a dinner/breakfast somewhere. Highly recommended booking a castle tour but dress warm 🙂
Teague6 years on AirbnbNone5October 2024Was a great expansive place to stay. the whole place felt great value for money, even in the winter months when the castle is closed. struggled getting in the red door at night but that was due to our own stupidity! the flat was lovely!

The rooms are enourmous and feel so grand – it's everything you want from being in a castle. Thirlestane has plenty of interesting history and we booked ourselves onto a tour on our first full day there, something we highly recommend. Lauder is a short walk away and has all the shops you need to stock up for a holiday and The Black Bull does great food, or Provender is a fabulous restaurant a short drive away in Melrose. We went for some lovely walks in the castle grounds and around the Scottish Borders and used the Park & Rides to have some trips into Edinburgh. We loved our stay in Thirlestane and would absolutely recommend it for anyone wanting a truly special experience of Scotland.

The apartment was immaculate and we had everything we needed. It was very dog friendly, with lovely grounds to walk in and dog bowls/treats were provided. We would definitely stay again!
