Overview

Craig y Nos Castle is one of Wales's most fascinating and atmospheric properties, a Gothic Revival castle set in the upper Swansea Valley on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park. Once the beloved home of the legendary Victorian opera singer Adelina Patti — the most famous soprano of the 19th century — the castle retains the artistic flair and theatrical grandeur that she brought to every aspect of her life. The castle's crowning glory is the Patti Theatre, a miniature opera house that Patti had built within the castle walls. This intimate 150-seat theatre, modelled on the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, is remarkably well preserved and is still used for performances, weddings, and events. The castle's other public rooms include the Nicolini Room (named after Patti's husband), with its ornate ceiling and period furnishings, and the conservatory overlooking the grounds. Accommodation at Craig y Nos is refreshingly affordable for a castle of this calibre. The 36 rooms range from atmospheric castle chambers to more standard rooms, all offering comfortable beds and modern en-suite bathrooms. While the décor is more modest than some luxury castle hotels, the sheer character of the building — with its stone corridors, spiral staircases, and Gothic windows — more than compensates. The castle's location in the Brecon Beacons is a major draw. The national park offers world-class walking, including the iconic ascent of Pen y Fan, Wales's highest peak. The Brecon Beacons also holds International Dark Sky Reserve status, meaning the stargazing from the castle grounds is spectacular. Adjacent to the castle, the Craig y Nos Country Park and the Dan-yr-Ogof Show Caves provide easy family-friendly excursions. Craig y Nos Castle proves that you don't need a king's ransom to sleep in a castle.

Castle History

Craig y Nos Castle was built in 1841 and purchased in 1878 by the opera singer Adelina Patti, who spent over £100,000 (equivalent to millions today) transforming it into her dream home, complete with a private theatre. After Patti's death in 1919, the castle served as a tuberculosis hospital for much of the 20th century. It was converted into a hotel and events venue in the 1990s.
