Overview
Fonmon Castle is one of the very few medieval castles in Wales that has been continuously inhabited since its construction in the early 13th century. Set in beautiful grounds in the Vale of Glamorgan, just thirty minutes from Cardiff, this remarkable property offers exclusive-use accommodation that allows groups of up to sixteen guests to have an entire castle to themselves. The castle's history is written in its walls. The oldest sections date from around 1200, with significant additions made in the 17th and 18th centuries. The result is a fascinating architectural tapestry, with medieval stone walls giving way to elegant Georgian interiors. The library, with its 18th-century plasterwork ceiling and floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, is one of the finest rooms in any Welsh castle. The drawing room and dining room are equally impressive, with period furniture, family portraits, and roaring fires creating an atmosphere of lived-in grandeur. The eight bedrooms are spread across the castle's upper floors, each with its own character and period features. From the principal suite with its four-poster bed and views over the gardens to cosy chambers in the older parts of the castle, every room tells a story. Modern bathrooms and comfortable beds ensure a good night's sleep despite the medieval surroundings. Fonmon's gardens are a highlight in themselves. The walled garden, herbaceous borders, and woodland walks have been developed over centuries and provide a peaceful retreat. The castle's proximity to the Glamorgan Heritage Coast — one of Wales's most beautiful stretches of coastline — adds another dimension to any stay. Dramatic cliffs, hidden coves, and the historic town of Llantwit Major are all within easy reach, while Cardiff offers world-class rugby, dining, and cultural attractions just thirty minutes away.

Castle History
Fonmon Castle was built around 1200 by the St John family following the Norman conquest of Glamorgan. It was sold to Colonel Philip Jones, Oliver Cromwell's right-hand man in Wales, in the 1650s. The Jones family added Georgian wings and the spectacular library in the 18th century. The castle has remained in the same family since the 17th century and is one of only a handful of medieval Welsh castles still in private occupation.
