Overview
Ruthin Castle is a unique Welsh castle hotel that sits within the evocative ruins of a 13th-century fortress in the beautiful Vale of Clwyd, Denbighshire. The original castle was built by Edward I during his conquest of Wales, and its atmospheric ruins — complete with curtain walls, towers, and a dry moat — form a dramatic setting for the Victorian mansion that was later built within and around them. Together, they create a property that is both historically fascinating and thoroughly comfortable. The hotel offers 64 rooms ranging from standard rooms in the modern wing to atmospheric castle rooms featuring four-poster beds, exposed stone walls, and views over the ruins and parkland. All rooms are equipped with modern amenities including en-suite bathrooms, tea and coffee facilities, and free Wi-Fi. The castle's location on a hilltop means many rooms enjoy panoramic views over the lush Vale of Clwyd and the distant Clwydian Range. Like its English counterpart Lumley Castle, Ruthin offers a popular medieval banquet experience. Guests don period garb and enjoy a multi-course feast in the castle's medieval-themed banqueting hall, accompanied by entertainment from jesters, wenches, and musicians. It's a lively, theatrical evening that adds a dash of fun to any castle stay. For more refined dining, the castle's restaurant serves modern Welsh cuisine using locally sourced ingredients. The castle's leisure facilities include an indoor swimming pool, sauna, and spa treatment rooms, making it a popular choice for weekend breaks. The 30 acres of grounds — where peacocks roam freely — are perfect for gentle walks. Ruthin Castle's location on the edge of Snowdonia makes it an excellent base for exploring North Wales, with the mountains, waterfalls, and ziplines of Snowdonia just thirty minutes away, and the world-famous Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and charming town of Llangollen within easy reach.

Castle History
The original Ruthin Castle was built in 1282 by Dafydd ap Gruffydd, brother of Llywelyn the Last, and later seized by Edward I. It was besieged during the Owain Glyndŵr uprising in 1400 and damaged in the English Civil War. The Victorian mansion within the ruins was built in 1826 and converted into a hotel in the mid-20th century. The medieval ruins are now managed by Cadw, the Welsh heritage body.
