Overview
Amberley Castle is one of England's most enchanting castle hotels, set within 900-year-old walls in the heart of the South Downs National Park. This Grade I listed property seamlessly blends medieval grandeur with contemporary luxury, offering an unforgettable experience for couples, special celebrations, and discerning travellers seeking something truly extraordinary. As you pass beneath the genuine working portcullis — one of only a handful still in use in England — you step into a world where history and indulgence intertwine. The castle's 19 individually designed rooms and suites are spread across the main castle and its historic outbuildings. Each room tells its own story through period features such as four-poster beds, exposed beams, lancet windows, and original fireplaces, complemented by the finest modern amenities including luxurious bathrooms, premium toiletries, and state-of-the-art entertainment systems. Several suites feature private gardens or balconies with views over the castle's 12 acres of manicured grounds, which include a championship croquet lawn and secret walled gardens. The Queens Room restaurant holds three AA Rosettes and serves exquisite modern British cuisine crafted from locally sourced Sussex produce. Dine beneath a barrel-vaulted ceiling dating back to the 12th century, where candlelight flickers against ancient stone walls. The extensive wine list features over 200 bins, curated to complement the seasonal tasting menus. For more casual fare, afternoon tea in the Great Room is a quintessentially English experience. Whether you're celebrating a milestone anniversary, planning an intimate wedding, or simply escaping the pace of modern life, Amberley Castle offers an atmosphere of timeless romance. The surrounding South Downs provide endless opportunities for walking, cycling, and exploring quintessential English villages, while the historic city of Chichester and the grandeur of Arundel Castle are just a short drive away.

Castle History
Amberley Castle's origins date to 1103 when Bishop Luffa of Chichester built a manor house on the site. The curtain wall and portcullis were added in 1377 by Bishop Rede as protection during the Hundred Years' War. The castle served as a residence for the Bishops of Chichester for over 500 years before being requisitioned during the English Civil War. It was converted into a luxury hotel in 1988 and has since become one of England's most celebrated castle hotels.
