Overview
Peckforton Castle rises dramatically from a wooded hilltop in the heart of Cheshire, its towers and battlements commanding spectacular views across the Cheshire Plain to the distant Welsh mountains. Built between 1844 and 1850 by John Tollemache, 1st Baron Tollemache, this is the last genuine medieval-style castle to be built in England, and its imposing silhouette has made it one of the most photographed buildings in the North West. The castle operates primarily as a luxury hotel and one of England's most sought-after wedding and events venues. The 48 individually designed bedrooms range from intimate castle chambers in the original towers to spacious suites in the converted stable block. The castle rooms are particularly atmospheric, with arrow-slit windows, stone walls, and period furnishings creating a genuinely medieval feel, complemented by luxury bathrooms and contemporary amenities. The 1851 Restaurant offers modern British cuisine in a stunning setting overlooking the Cheshire countryside. Named for the year the castle was completed, the restaurant focuses on locally sourced produce and seasonal ingredients. The castle also features the Cavalry Bar, set in the original stable courtyard, offering a more relaxed atmosphere for cocktails, light meals, and afternoon teas. Peckforton's facilities extend beyond accommodation and dining. An indoor swimming pool, gymnasium, and spa treatment rooms provide opportunities for relaxation, while the 600 acres of surrounding woodland and parkland offer walking trails and outdoor adventures. The ruined medieval Beeston Castle sits on the adjacent hilltop, providing a fascinating contrast to Peckforton's Victorian interpretation of the medieval style. Historic Chester, with its Roman walls, medieval rows, and renowned zoo, is just twenty minutes away.
