Overview
Langley Castle is a magnificent 14th-century fortified castle hotel set in 12 acres of Northumberland woodland, just a stone's throw from the iconic Hadrian's Wall World Heritage Site. With walls up to seven feet thick, genuine battlements, and a history spanning nearly 700 years, Langley offers an authentic medieval experience combined with warm Northumbrian hospitality and modern comforts. The castle's guest rooms range from intimate castle chambers — complete with original window seats carved into the massive walls, four-poster beds, and spa baths — to more contemporary rooms in the castle's restored outbuildings. Each room is individually styled, ensuring no two stays are quite the same. The castle chambers are particularly special, featuring the original medieval architecture including lancet windows, stone spiral staircases, and views over the surrounding woodland and countryside. Dining at Langley Castle is a highlight of any visit. The Josephine Restaurant, named after the castle's saviour Cadwallader Bates' wife who oversaw its restoration, serves modern British cuisine in a stunning candlelit setting beneath the castle's original vaulted ceilings. The menu showcases the finest Northumbrian produce, from locally reared lamb to North Sea fish, accompanied by an impressive wine selection. For a more relaxed meal, the Drawing Room bar offers lighter fare and an excellent selection of local ales and spirits. Langley Castle's location makes it the perfect base for exploring Northumberland — often called England's most remote and unspoilt county. Hadrian's Wall runs just minutes from the castle, offering world-class walking and cycling routes. The Northumberland International Dark Sky Park is nearby, providing some of Europe's best stargazing opportunities. The castle also hosts weddings and events, with its medieval great hall providing a truly unforgettable backdrop for celebrations.

Castle History
Langley Castle was built around 1350 by Sir Thomas de Lucy during the reign of Edward III. It was damaged during the English Civil War and left roofless for two centuries. In 1882, historian Cadwallader Bates purchased the ruin and began a faithful restoration, completed by his wife Josephine after his death. The castle was converted into a hotel in 1986 and has since been recognised as one of England's finest castle hotels.
