Overview
Thornbury Castle holds a unique distinction in English hospitality: it is the only Tudor castle operating as a hotel in the country. Built in 1511 by Edward Stafford, 3rd Duke of Buckingham, the castle was seized by Henry VIII after Stafford's execution in 1521, and the king himself stayed here with Anne Boleyn in 1535 — guests today can sleep in the very bedchamber they are believed to have used. The castle's 27 rooms and suites are spread across the original Tudor structure and its surrounding buildings. The most sought-after rooms are in the castle tower, featuring original oriel windows, stone fireplaces, and four-poster beds draped in rich fabrics. The thick walls, winding staircases, and unexpected alcoves create an atmosphere that is genuinely transporting — you half expect to encounter a Tudor courtier around every corner. More contemporary comforts include luxurious bathrooms, premium linens, and modern heating. Dining at Thornbury Castle is an event in itself. The Baron's Dining Room, with its high ceilings, heraldic decorations, and candlelit ambiance, provides the setting for a refined menu celebrating the best of West Country produce. The castle's own vineyard — the oldest Tudor garden in England still in cultivation — supplies herbs and fruit for the kitchen, creating a true garden-to-table experience. An extensive wine list complements the seasonal menus. The castle sits at a geographical crossroads between some of England's most popular destinations. Bath, with its Roman baths and Georgian crescents, is just thirty minutes away. The honey-coloured villages of the Cotswolds lie to the east, while the vibrant city of Bristol is twenty minutes to the south. The castle's own grounds, including the Tudor vineyard, herb garden, and surrounding parkland, offer peaceful retreat within these ancient walls.
