Overview

Bovey Castle is a grand Edwardian country house hotel set in 275 acres of grounds within Dartmoor National Park, one of England's most dramatically beautiful landscapes. While not a medieval fortress, this magnificent property offers a castle-like experience with towers, turrets, and a grandeur that has attracted discerning guests since it was built in 1906 for Viscount Hambledon. Today, as a luxury hotel, it provides one of the most comprehensive resort experiences in the South West. The hotel's 60 rooms and suites range from elegant standard rooms to spectacular suites with panoramic Dartmoor views. The interiors blend Edwardian elegance with contemporary luxury, featuring fine fabrics, quality furnishings, and marble bathrooms. Several suites feature private terraces and roll-top baths positioned to capture the magnificent views over the North Teign valley. Bovey Castle's facilities are exceptional. The championship 18-hole golf course weaves through the Dartmoor landscape, offering challenging play amid spectacular scenery. The spa and wellness centre provides a full menu of treatments alongside a swimming pool, hydrotherapy pool, and gymnasium. For those seeking outdoor adventure, the estate offers falconry, archery, clay pigeon shooting, off-road driving, and guided Dartmoor walks. Families are particularly well catered for, with dedicated children's programmes, an adventure playground, and family-friendly activities throughout the year. Multiple dining options range from the formal Great Western restaurant — serving modern British cuisine with a Devonshire accent — to the casual Smith's Brasserie and the cosy bar. The surrounding Dartmoor landscape provides a dramatic backdrop for any stay, with wild ponies, ancient stone circles, spectacular tors, and hidden river valleys all waiting to be explored.

Castle History

Bovey Castle was built in 1906 for W.H. Smith's son, Viscount Hambledon, as a country retreat. The architect Detmar Blow designed the house in an imposing Edwardian style. The property served as a military hospital during World War I and was later a boys' school. It was converted into a luxury hotel in 2003 and has been extensively refurbished, becoming one of Devon's premier destination hotels and a member of the Eden Hotel Collection.
