Overview

Lumley Castle is one of the great castles of northern England, a magnificent 14th-century fortress that rises above the banks of the River Wear near Chester-le-Street in County Durham. With its four imposing corner towers, battlemented walls, and quintessentially English setting — the castle overlooks the picturesque Durham County Cricket Ground — Lumley offers a castle experience that is both historically rich and full of life. The castle operates as a hotel with 73 individually styled rooms ranging from classic rooms to luxurious castle suites. The most memorable accommodation is found in the castle's original towers and medieval quarters, where thick stone walls, period furniture, four-poster beds, and panoramic views create an unforgettable atmosphere. The castle's public spaces are equally impressive, including the magnificent Baron's Hall and the intimate Knight's Bar with its roaring log fire and selection of fine whiskies and ales. One of Lumley Castle's most popular features is the Elizabethan Banquet, a theatrical evening of feasting, entertainment, and revelry held in the medieval Baron's Hall. Guests are welcomed by 'lords' and 'ladies' of the castle, served a multi-course medieval-style banquet, and entertained with music, comedy, and drama. It's an experience that perfectly captures the spirit of English castle hospitality and has been delighting visitors for decades. The castle's location in County Durham provides easy access to some of the region's finest attractions. Durham Cathedral — widely regarded as one of the greatest buildings in Europe — and the neighbouring Durham Castle (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) are just four miles away. The open-air Beamish Museum, the Angel of the North, and the historic town of Chester-le-Street are all within easy reach, while the castle's own riverside setting offers peaceful walks along the Wear.

Castle History

Lumley Castle was built in 1389 by Sir Ralph Lumley, who received a licence to crenellate from Richard II. The castle remained in the Lumley family for centuries, with significant modifications made in the Elizabethan and Jacobean periods. During the English Civil War, it was besieged by Scottish forces. The Lumley family converted it into a hotel in the 1970s, and it has since become one of the most popular castle hotels in northern England.
