Overview

Barcaldine Castle is a magnificently restored 16th-century tower house nestled in the heart of Argyll, one of Scotland's most breathtaking regions. Built in 1609 by Sir Duncan Campbell of Glenorchy, this Grade A listed building has been lovingly restored to offer modern luxury within an authentic historical setting. The castle commands sweeping views over Loch Creran towards the mountains of Morvern and Kingairloch, creating a truly unforgettable backdrop for your stay. Inside, the castle retains its original spiral staircase, barrel-vaulted ceilings, and massive stone fireplaces — features that transport you back centuries while still providing every contemporary comfort. The great hall serves as the main living area, with a roaring log fire and comfortable seating for the whole party. The well-equipped kitchen allows self-catering groups to prepare meals together, and there's a formal dining room seating up to 12 guests. Each of the five bedrooms has been individually designed, blending period character with luxurious bedding and en-suite or adjacent bathrooms. Wake to the sounds of birdsong and views of the Scottish Highlands from your window. The castle grounds include private gardens, woodland walks, and ample parking. Whether you're seeking a romantic getaway, a family celebration, or a base for exploring the West Highlands, Barcaldine Castle offers an experience that is both deeply historic and wonderfully comfortable. The surrounding area is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts, with hillwalking, kayaking, cycling, and wildlife watching all on the doorstep. The charming harbour town of Oban — the gateway to the Hebridean islands — is just twenty minutes away, offering excellent seafood restaurants, whisky distilleries, and boat trips to the Inner Hebrides.

Castle History

Barcaldine Castle was built in 1609 by "Black Duncan" Campbell of Glenorchy, 7th Laird of Glenorchy. The castle played a role in the turbulent Jacobite period and was occupied by government troops during the 1745 uprising. After falling into disrepair in the 19th century, it was sensitively restored in the early 20th century and again in 2008-2014, preserving its original architectural character while introducing modern amenities.
