Overview

Glenapp Castle is a magnificent Scottish baronial castle hotel perched above the Ayrshire coast, offering five-star luxury in one of Scotland's most spectacular settings. Built in 1870, this turreted masterpiece sits within 36 acres of exquisitely maintained gardens and woodland, with sweeping views across the Irish Sea to the dramatic outline of Ailsa Craig and, on clear days, the mountains of the Isle of Arran beyond. The castle's 17 individually designed bedrooms and suites are the epitome of Scottish luxury. Rich fabrics, antique furnishings, and tasteful contemporary touches create an atmosphere of refined elegance, while views from the bedroom windows are simply breathtaking. Many rooms feature original fireplaces, deep-set windows, and the ornate plasterwork that characterises the finest Victorian baronial architecture. The castle's public rooms are equally impressive, from the oak-panelled library to the grand drawing room where afternoon tea is served daily. Dining at Glenapp is a culinary journey through the finest Scottish produce. The restaurant showcases ingredients sourced from the castle's own kitchen garden, local farms, and the surrounding seas. The tasting menu changes daily, reflecting what's freshest and most seasonal, and is complemented by an exceptional wine cellar. Breakfast is a lavish affair featuring everything from traditional full Scottish to freshly baked pastries and local smoked salmon. Beyond the castle walls, Glenapp offers a wealth of experiences that take full advantage of its extraordinary location. Guests can arrange private boat trips to Ailsa Craig — a volcanic plug that is home to one of the world's largest gannet colonies — or try their hand at falconry with the castle's resident hawks. The Ayrshire coast is also one of Scotland's premier golfing destinations, with legendary courses including Royal Troon and Turnberry within easy reach.

Castle History

Glenapp Castle was built in 1870 for the Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Ayrshire, designed by the celebrated architect David Bryce in the Scottish baronial style. The castle passed through several owners before being converted into a luxury hotel in 2000. A major refurbishment in 2015 restored and enhanced the property, earning it a coveted five-star rating from VisitScotland.
