Overview
Tulloch Castle is one of the Scottish Highlands' most characterful castle hotels, offering an atmospheric and affordable base for exploring the magnificent landscapes of Ross-shire and the famous North Coast 500 driving route. Dating back to the 12th century, this substantial castle sits on a wooded hilltop above the town of Dingwall, just fifteen minutes north of Inverness, with commanding views over the surrounding countryside. The castle's public spaces are full of character. The Great Hall, now the hotel's bar, features a massive stone fireplace, exposed beams, and walls lined with antique weapons and Highland memorabilia — it's the perfect spot for a dram of whisky after a day's exploring. The panelled dining room serves hearty Scottish cuisine, with an emphasis on local Highland produce including venison, salmon, and seasonal game. For those with a taste for the supernatural, Tulloch is reputedly one of Scotland's most haunted castles, and ghost tours can be arranged for brave guests. The 20 guest rooms are spread across the castle and its extensions, ranging from atmospheric castle chambers with four-poster beds and original features to more contemporary standard rooms. While the accommodation is more modest than some castle hotels, the authentic atmosphere and excellent value for money make Tulloch a popular choice for travellers who want to sleep in a genuine Highland castle without spending a fortune. Tulloch Castle's location is one of its greatest assets. Dingwall sits at the start (or end) of the legendary NC500 — Scotland's answer to Route 66 — making the castle a natural base for this iconic road trip. The surrounding Highlands offer endless outdoor adventures, from climbing Ben Wyvis to whisky distillery tours, dolphin watching in the Cromarty Firth, and exploring the mysterious beauty of Loch Ness.

Castle History
Tulloch Castle's origins date to the 12th century when the Norse-descended Clan Bain built a fortification on the site. The castle was later held by the Clan Davidson and Clan Bain through the medieval period. Major extensions were added in the 17th and 19th centuries. The castle served as a hospital during World War I before being converted into a hotel. It is said to be haunted by the "Green Lady," believed to be a former Davidson clan member.
