Overview
Dairsie Castle is an exquisitely restored 16th-century Z-plan tower house in the historic Kingdom of Fife, offering self-catering accommodation that is both deeply atmospheric and surprisingly comfortable. Set in a tranquil riverside location just six miles from the world-famous university town of St Andrews, this is a castle that combines genuine medieval character with a homely, welcoming feel. The castle's most striking feature is its original turnpike staircase, which spirals through the full height of the tower and connects the ground-floor entrance to the atmospheric great hall on the first floor. The great hall serves as the main living and dining space, with a magnificent stone fireplace, vaulted ceiling, and comfortable furnishings that invite lingering conversations and cosy evenings by the fire. The well-appointed kitchen is equipped with everything needed for self-catering. Three bedrooms are spread across the upper floors of the tower, each accessed via the spiral staircase and each offering a unique character. The principal bedroom features exposed stonework, a four-poster bed, and views over the surrounding countryside, while the two additional rooms are perfectly suited for families or groups of friends. Modern bathrooms have been sensitively incorporated without compromising the castle's architectural integrity. The castle's location in Fife is ideal for golfers — with St Andrews and its legendary Old Course just minutes away — as well as for anyone wishing to explore Scotland's east coast. The picturesque East Neuk fishing villages, the renaissance splendour of Falkland Palace, and the award-winning V&A Museum in Dundee are all within easy reach. For a quieter day, the castle's own grounds offer riverside walks and a sense of peace that has endured for five centuries.

Castle History
Dairsie Castle dates from the early 16th century and was originally built by the Learmonth family. Archbishop Spottiswoode of St Andrews held a General Assembly of the Church of Scotland at Dairsie in 1597. The castle fell into ruin but was painstakingly restored in the early 2000s using traditional materials and methods, earning praise from Historic Scotland for the quality of the work.
