Overview

The Granary Lodge at the Castle of Mey offers a truly unique accommodation experience on the grounds of the late Queen Mother's beloved Highland retreat. Located on Scotland's dramatic north coast, just six miles west of John O'Groats, this beautifully converted granary building provides comfortable bed-and-breakfast accommodation with views across the Pentland Firth to the Orkney Islands — one of the most extraordinary vistas in all of Britain. The Castle of Mey was purchased in 1952 by Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, who spent her summers here for nearly fifty years until her death in 2002. She loved the castle for its remote beauty, its gardens, and the warmth of the Caithness community. Today, the castle and its grounds are maintained by The Queen Elizabeth Castle of Mey Trust, and the Granary Lodge — purpose-built as a bed and breakfast — allows visitors to share in the Queen Mother's love of this special place. The Granary Lodge offers individually designed rooms, each named after features of the estate. Rooms are comfortable and tastefully furnished, with en-suite bathrooms and views over the castle grounds or the sea. A generous Scottish breakfast is served each morning in the dining room, featuring local produce including Caithness bacon, eggs, and freshly baked bread. The lodge also has a comfortable sitting room for guests. Staying at the Castle of Mey places you on the famous North Coast 500 driving route, with some of Scotland's most spectacular scenery on your doorstep. The Pentland Firth, the John O'Groats area, and the wild Caithness coastline offer remarkable walking, wildlife watching, and photography. Ferries to Orkney depart from nearby Scrabster and Gills Bay, while the world-class surf break at Thurso is just twenty minutes west. It's a stay that combines royal heritage with raw Highland beauty.

Castle History

The Castle of Mey was built between 1566 and 1572 by George Sinclair, 4th Earl of Caithness. It fell into disrepair before being purchased in 1952 by Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, who lovingly restored it over the following decades. She visited every summer for nearly 50 years. After her death in 2002, the castle was entrusted to The Queen Elizabeth Castle of Mey Trust. The Granary Lodge was opened as a B&B to help fund the castle's upkeep.
